For the specifics, this may only appeal to
jennett but I am going to share anyway because I think it's cool.
Yesterday I found a posting for a job out west at a Very Prestigious School, doing information literacy and learning. For the non-librarians, this translates into being a librarian who shows you how to use the library and the plethora of potential information sources. "Our" job is to separate the wheat from the chaff, and do things like make additional course materials which students can use.
Given that the position wants someone who has concrete years of experience doing this work, I might not be qualified for it. When I have lunch with S on Saturday, I am going to show her the posting and see what she thinks about my applying for it. The school is an alma mater of hers, so I will trust her opinion.
I also asked our reference librarian here if she thought I should apply for it. I pointed out that one of the requirements for the application is to submit a guide or tutorial you have used before. In theory, I could do this, it just will be a virgin guide. The inquiry about this, however, led into another possibility for something I can do on the job which will be great for future applications.
As part of a reorganization and revision of my job duties, some public service has been added. I've done this for a few years anyway, putting in hours at circulation and helping out patrons. Now everyone will have to do this and the training will include how to use the online catalog and main databases. That's old hat to me, so there is the option that I can do different or additional training.
Perhaps some of that training for the spring will be to work on building a new or revising an existing library guide. Sign me up! I hope this happens.
It's difficult to break into reference work now. All the positions I see want people who have previous experience as a reference librarian. Not easy for someone who recently got their MLS to break into this area. Reminds me of the old PSA with the supposed Indian guru: how does one get experience without a job, and get a job without experience?
In other news, the rise in temperature today means that I have more energy. Maybe tonight I can get those cover letters done! Got two jobs with application deadlines of Friday, and I would be glad to do either. *crosses fingers*
